Be a Dumb Tweet

Dumb Twitter

Are you making your followers feel dumb?

This is one of the most difficult and frustrating parts of Twitter. Not everyone is as smart as you are. Not everyone is good at spelling or grammar. Not everyone has a large vocabulary or a deep understanding of obscure topics. You have to speak to your audience or you will risk losing your audience.

If you are trying to appeal to a wide range of people, the last thing you want to do is make them feel stupid or inferior. You want them to feel like they can talk to you and that they get you. You want to be relatable. To be relatable you have to be accessible. This means not speaking over peoples heads or making lots of unknown references. Keep the inside jokes between you and your friends, because the rest of the twitterverse just feels left out of the loop. And if they are left out of your loop then you will certainly be left out of there’s.

I bring this up because it is something I frequently see and frequently have to remind myself of as well. When you are tweeting you want to make sure that you are speaking in the voice of your brand. But you also need to speak in the voice that your audience wants to hear. So if your audience likes snobby intellectuals then feel free to talk about the disenfranchisement of ethnic minorities post-antibellum america or the hegemony of goth culture. But if you don’t want to sound like a uptight academic then you might want to keep the big words on the smallish scale and remember that not all your followers understand complex vocabulary or references.

Most of your followers will not do you the favor and tell you when you are talking over their head. They will just stop paying attention. So you don’t need to be a dumb tweet but make sure you keep your tweets accessible.

Why Your Twitter Post is Not Being Seen on Facebook

Are you wondering why you should not syndicate your Twitter on Facebook? Isn’t it easier to have your Tweets automatically post an update to your Facebook page? Isn’t it easier to not have to go onto Facebook and post yourself? Of course it is. However, if it is important to you that people see your posts, then you will say no to syndication.

I can give you lots of technical jargon that will tell you why you should not syndicate. Things having to do with News Feed Optimization and the algorithm that will prevent your content from making it onto the news feed. But there is really no better way to understand why you shouldn’t do this than to see it with your own eyes.

This post was taken directly from the newsfeed. You will notice that right underneath the post it says “See 10 more posts from Twitter”. You might think that this is 10 more posts from that same person. You would be wrong. These are 10 more stories from 10 different people, they just all happen to be syndicating through Twitter.

Syndication is an easy way to make one post and have it appear on all your relevant social networks. Where this is fine for LinkedIn, it does not work for Facebook. Outside of the fact that Facebook and Twitter are usually two different audiences, and that what is allowed on Twitter (ie. nudity) is not allowed on Facebook, your posts have a significantly lower chance of being seen because of getting lumped together with other Twitter posts.

It is not your content they are discriminating against. Facebook discriminates against syndication in any form. So if you are syndicating then you will be lumped into posts such as the one featured above. So if you want people to see your posts, you have to get on Facebook and actually post it yourself.

#TittyTuesday #FollowFriday and other sexy hashtags

, ,

Sexy Woman blowing hashtag kissesWant to tap into the larger Twitter world and reach people beyond your followers?  Hashtags are your key to the Twitterverse, and keywords are the spare keys you hide under the false rock in your garden.

Hashtags are words with a # in front of them. You will often see multiple words strung together into one, almost unintelligible, jumble of letters.  For instance #deletemynumberif, which is trending as I write this. If you were to space this out it would read “delete my number if”.  To make it easier to differentiate words, people will often capitalize the beginning of each word. The tag would then look like: #DeleteMyNumberIf. This makes it easier to read when stringing the words together.

What makes hashtags such a powerful tool is that they are easy to track and easy to follow. When someone uses one in a post, you can just click the tag and it will show you all the other tweets using that same tag. You can also search for specific hashtags. There is a website that shows you the popularity, and rate of posting, of hashtags. Go to Hashtag.org to see the influence of any hashtag.

Here is a list of popular hashtags and their rate for being tweeted. Now, .07% might seem low, but the average number of tweets sent per day is 140 million. So .07% is 98,000 tweets – and that’s a lot!

  • #TittyTuesday .07%
  • #Sexy #.25%
  • #FollowFriday .09%
  • #FF 1.73% (this is a more popular hashtag for #FollowFriday)

Keywords are searchable, but not clickable. This means you can use Twitter search to look for the keywords, but if you use them in a post they will not be clickable.  One thing nice about keywords is that they do not have to be pushed together to form one nearly illegible word, they can be a series of words with spaces. This also means they are harder to spot as being keywords. However, if you use good keywords you can tap into some great trending topics.

Another way to tap into trending topics is to look at your Twitter feed. On the right side menu, there is a topic called “Trending” that will show you what is currently trending.  You can also go to sites like WhatTheTrend.com to see this. The site will also tell you why something is trending. For instance, “Hard Nipples” is trending. Well, you might think, of course it is trending! Who doesn’t like hard nipples?  Well this is not trending because of any Twitter After Dark action.  It is trending because a judge from America’s Best Dance Crew said something about his nipples getting hard in response to a pole dance. Ok, so maybe it should be a part of Twitter After Dark.

But just because it does not originate in adult does not mean that you can’t capitalize on it.  You have an audience that is specifically paying attention to this keyword. Tweet it out and use the keyword; you might reach an audience you don’t normally get to talk to.

Keywords and hashtags are significantly under used in adult tweets.  If you want to reach your audience, and broaden your audience, be strategic – use hashtags and keywords!

Protected Tweets..Protected from Whom?

,

I recently went to retweet someone’s post and received a warning:

Warning: This tweet is from a protected user

I was taken aback! This was a porn star. This is someone who is in the public eye. Why on earth would they protect their tweets?

If you are wondering what a protected tweet it, it is essentially a private profile on Twitter. It means that only approved people can see your tweets.

This is fine if you are just a person and you don’t want the bots to get you, or spam. If you tweet content that you don’t want certain people to see. Or if you tweet content that only want certain people to see.

Generally speaking the number one thing people are wanting to protect themselves against is porn spam. But if you are in porn, then you are likely not so worried about that.

Regardless, if you are a website or a porn star or content producer, having protected tweets is counter productive. Your goal is to get people to follow you. Increasing your followers, increasing engagement, improving your business networking opportunities is centered around interactions. If people can’t interact with you, or even see your posts, then what is the point?

Because I am on the “approved” list, I can see this persons tweets. But this tweep just missed a networking opportunity. I was going to retweet something interesting and engaging. Maybe some of my followers would have started following this person, because I facilitated an introduction.

I could have decided to retweet anyway. However, it would only be visible to other people who follow this person. So I abstained.

Re-tweet lost. Networking lost. Opportunity lost. shame.

4 Mobile Twitter Apps, 1 Winner!

Friday Feature Photo: The amazingly sexy Teagan Presley

Adult conferences are going on all year. You might be going to consumer shows or business to business. But if you are going to the shows and you are on Twitter then you know the importance, and frustration, of mobile Twitter apps.  When you are at the shows you need to be able to easily tweet pics and updates. You need to be able to talk to the fans who are tweeting you and generally manage your Twitter account. The last thing you want to worry about it if your mobile Twitter app is going to work.

So now take this problem and multiply it by multiple accounts and you have my problem.  Though some people only have one account, there are many of us out there who tweet from multiple accounts. Sometimes they might be clients we work for, or brands and stars that we manage. Some might be various stars who have multiple Twitter accounts for different purposes of their public brand strategy.

Regardless of managing one or many Twitter accounts, you need to have an mobile app that works well.

TwitBird Pro

Do you have a mobile Twitter app that you like? why?

I may have found a new favorite mobile Twitter app. For most people they only tweet from one account. So using something like the Twitter mobile or Hootsuite works just fine. I am what you would call a power user. I tweet from roughly a dozen twitter accounts. How do I keep up with it all? Well, that is a different conversation. Because I am a power user I need an app that can keep up with me while I keep up with the Joneses.

Hootsuite Mobile

I was using this for a while. Their UI (user interface) was the most preferable. It was easy to go between account, add lists and searches, keep track of mentions, DMs and Retweets. But I was limited to 5 accounts. Beyond that I find the core account management of Hootsuite to be very limiting for a team.

So this was not sufficient for my needs.

Twitter Mobile

Um, yeah. This one was incredibly limited. It made retweeting really difficult as it was not allowing quoted retweets. A quoted retweet is where you comment on a tweet before you retweet it. ie. Funny! @funnyman my cat is nuts! See her eat almonds The Funny! would be the quoted retweet part. As I rarely retweet without a comment to promote engagement, this was an issue. Oh yeah, you can only tweet from one account. It is not a hub for multiple accounts.

No go.

Tweetdeck Mobile

I love Tweetdeck. They are likely my favorite Twitter manager for multiple accounts. You are not limited to the number of accounts you use. You can easily manage and monitor lists, DMs, mentions, retweets and searches. You can do quoted retweets. In their mobile they even had an extra special column that listed all the mentions from all your accounts in one panel. Love it! …except that it crashed all the time and I had to reinstall it 5 times over the course of one conference weekend. I also found their UI to be great on my laptop and really difficult to manage on my mobile devise. #Fail

Summary

I have tried others and they all roughly had the same core issues.

  • Don’t manage multiple accounts
  • Don’t do quoted retweets
  • Crash
  • Bad UI making it very cumbersome to use.
  • Slow

The Winner

TwitBird

I have recently started using TwitBird. They have a free and a pro version. The pro cost $2.99 and can manage up to 16 accounts. The free version manages 2. The UI is more like Hootsuite, except it is categorized by account, making it easier to keep track of what is happening in that account. So far (fingers are crossed) it is able to handle the multiple accounts without crashing and without being confusing. I can easily send quoted retweets and it is super easy to add people to lists.

Overall, if you only have one Twitter profile or manage multiple, I would highly recommend this app.

5 Tips for Live Tweeting

Adult Trading Card Diamond Kitty

Feature Friday Photo: They sexy & voluptuous Diamond Kitty.

I am totally tweeting this

Live tweeting is nothing more than tweeting about an event as it is happening.  But it can be a great tool to share your experience and report from an event and about an event.

Events and conferences are the perfect place to tweet live. It is a great way to share your experiences with your followers and get people more involved with what you are doing. Live tweeting also shows that you are relevant and active in current events, and not someone who only tweets in retrospect. Additionally, it is good way to network with other people at the conference.

  1. Hashtags– Most events will have a hashtag associated with the event. Make sure that you use that tag and tag all your tweets from the event with the tag.  This will let people know what you are tweeting about, and where you are tweeting from. Plus other people from the conference will be able to see your tweets and you might be able to set up some networking opportunities.
  2. Tell People– Let people know that you will be live tweeting.  Anyone who is interested in the show, but not there, will be likely to follow your tweets to get a first hand account of what is happening.
  3. Share you pics!– Take pics of the show. Remember a picture says 1000 words and twitter is limited to 140 character tweets.  Pics are a great way to share your experiences from the conference.  Tools like TwitPic are great for posting your pics on Twitter.
  4. Archive your tweets– You can keep a copy of all your tweets from the event by archiving the hashtag.  A great app for this is Twapper Keeper they will track a hashtag for you and create an archive that you can access later. This is great for blogging or being able to go over all the convo’s happening from the show when you have more time to look at what other people were saying.
  5. Live in the now– Don’t get so caught up in tweeting that you take yourself away from what is happening.  Use tools like speech to text to help you type. But mainly, make sure that you are enjoying with is happening right now, because as great a live tweeting is. You can always write about it later!

I Tweet Naked

, ,

As you know, I take part in a variety of social media platforms.  Primarily, I live on the big three: Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.  Besides doing my own marketing, I spend a lot of time on these sites looking at what other people are doing.  I like to point out, and often blog about, companies or people who are doing good jobs.  Every so often I come across a piece of communication that is SO far from good I have to share it as a “What NOT to do”.

Most of the time these come in the form of Spam or auto-DM’s. This one is a little different.

On LinkedIn you join groups to talk to people in your industry, grow your connections and perhaps even make some business deals.  It is a great resource, but not a particularly sexy place.  It is not a place to go see naked photos (though you will find some in certain groups), or a place to meet a date (though sometimes this does happen).  LinkedIn is primarily a place for business.

One of the greatest values are the connections.  If you share a group with someone, you know you have a conversation-starter and a reason to add them to your network of business connections.  Once you are networked with that person, you can send them a message (unless you have the paid version of LinkedIn, in which case you do not have to be in their network).

I belong to a lot of groups and many people network with me.  If we share a group, you have a 99% chance of me saying yes.

So recently I received a LinkedIn email message from a photographer that simply said:

“you might have better luck if you were more pleasing to the eyes or dressed sluttier.”

So first off – Holy Inappropriate, Batman! I mean really, in what world is this considered an acceptable communication for a business platform (or any platform)?

Secondly, what did this guy think he was going to accomplish? Was I immediately supposed to be in awe of his amazing insight and start sending him naked photos? Then hire him to help me to be a more attractive slut?

And third, I am not unpleasant to look at. And luck has nothing to do with it. As a business professional, consultant and strategist it is not my goal to appear in any way other than how / who I am, and my expertise is the engine of my success.

Even if some business professionals prefer to tweet in the nude (and if I do, how will you know?)!

So here’s the lesson: don’t insult your audience.  If you are emailing, make sure there is some relevant purpose and intent behind it. You never know who your message is going to. You might just be burning a bridge you will later need.
